On This Day: The Ghost Goal

Did you know? It was on this day in September 2008, Watford FC played against Reading in a Championship match at Vicarage Road. The game ended in a 2-2 draw, but it was not without controversy. The referee, Stuart Attwell, awarded a goal to Reading that has since become known as the "ghost goal".

What happened?

In the 13th minute of the game, Reading's Stephen Hunt took a shot that hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced down towards the goal line. The ball was cleared by Watford's John Eustace, and the game continued. However, Assistant Referee Nigel Bannister signaled to Attwell that the ball had crossed the line and was a goal. Attwell awarded the goal, despite protests from Watford players and fans.

What do we make of this, collectors?
