"I’ve got a great collection of Steve Young cards. If I remember correctly it all started with a free sample Pacific 1994 card that came with Touchdown Magazine. I was instantly hooked and cards were a great way of getting closer to the NFL at the time - finding out all about the players and loaded with facts and stats.
It was a great time to be 49ers fan with that 94/95 season being a Super Bowl winning season and I think it was the NFL Fleer 1995 set which involved buying packs for the first time. The Steve Young Touchdown Sensation insert from that set remains one of my favourite cards.
I’ve always loved Pacific cards too with the 1994 and 1995 base holding such fond memories. Another real favourite is the Pacific Prisms from 1995. To this day I’ve not been able to get hold of a Steve Young Gold so that’s on the list of wanted cards… one day!
It’s been great fun collecting just one player over all these years and it’s nice Steve gets included in some of the newer sets but for me I will always treasure those mid 90s cards. Last year I did treat myself to the famous and highly collectible Steve Young 1984 Topps USFL Rookie Card and it’s a great card. The 85 USFL card is also really nice and is among my only graded card in the collection an SGC 8.5.
As for some of the newer cards 2017 Certified Champions Gold /25 and 2016 Select Copper /49 are two of my favourites but I also love the National and Player of the Day sets - they very much remind me of throwback sets.
With all the cards collected I’m yet to get a Steve Young autographed card so that’s another on the hunt list. It’s been a lot of fun building the collection and cards always take me back to my early fan years of the NFL - it’s a great hobby and now I get to do it all again with my kids who love ripping packs and they have some great Kittle, Burrow and Herbert collections coming.
For the love of 90s base and that most wonderful of 49ers seasons way back."
